Convergence, 1952

Convergence, 1952 by Jackson Pollock
237.5 x 393.7 cm

Russia is closing in on us. Them with their ‘Communism’ and ‘Mother Russia’ forcing us into this cold war. America is the embodiment of freedom! Free speech! Free expression! FREEDOM! I do not take kindly to this kind of blatant societal oppression. I will not allow my freedom to be challenged, this is my home and I have a right to say what I want, do what I will. For that, I will paint this expression of mine on to the canvas.

Surprisingly, I was sponsored by the Congress for Cultural Freedom (an anti-communist advocacy group founded in 1950), which was backed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) (Karmel, 1999). I guess the CIA appreciated my style, because it steered clear of social realism and overt political gestures. My abstraction made my paintings charged with emotions and lack the logical train of thought in a rational person’s mind. I break out of the traditional conventions of painting and brought upon a new age of painting.
